U.S. House votes for tougher screening for refugees

By Chris Casteel November 19, 2015 0 shares WASHINGTON — Defying a veto threat, the U.S. House voted Thursday to require more screening before Syrian and Iraqi refugees can gain admission to the United States. The bill, hastily written in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks in Paris, was approved 289-137, with 47 Democrats in support and two Republicans opposed. All five Oklahomans in the House voted for the bill. Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Westville, said in an interview that adding to the screening procedures was a necessary precaution and not a statement that the United States was abandoning its humanitarian traditions.
